Ashtavinayak Enterprises runs an empty container yard at Mundra, Gujarat, stacked by shipping line, size, type and grade. The yard needed to know where every container actually stood, not where the stock report said it stood.

Problem

The yard knew what it held. It did not reliably know where. Position was recorded by hand after the move, or not at all, so the stock report drifted away from the stack within hours of being sent.

  • Slot position written down after the lift, or reconstructed later
  • Finding a container took anywhere from thirty minutes to three hours
  • Boxes set down in the wrong line’s block, invisible to both
  • Release orders answered by walking the rows to find the box
  • Stock reports to the line already out of date when they were sent

Solution

WebOccult mounted cameras and edge units on all six container handling machines in the yard. Every lift reads the container number and records the position at the moment of pick and again at the moment of drop, so the yard map is a by-product of the work rather than a separate task.

  • Reads the ISO 6346 code and check digit at the machine, before the box is set down
  • Records a geo-tagged position at pick and at drop, on every move
  • Builds the yard map from machine movements, with no fixed gantry over the stacks
  • Answers a release order from the map, so nobody walks the rows
  • Flags a placement that does not match the intended slot while the operator can still correct it
